How everyone can make a difference through sustainable living
Today, it is clear that we need to take another look at our impact on the planet by living more sustainably and reducing our carbon footprint. What can we do to make an impact and contribute to the global fight against climate change?
Sustainable living starts with lifestyle changes
If you really want to reduce your impact on the environment, start by making small but important lifestyle changes. Small steps are the way to a sustainable and conscious lifestyle. Avoiding plastic bags or reducing meat consumption may seem insignificant, but these small actions can lead to dramatic changes in the world, as those around you start to follow your example.
Here's how small lifestyle changes can have a big impact on our planet:
Eliminate plastics
One of the most important changes you can make is to eliminate as much plastic as possible. Plastic does not break down. Almost all of the plastic ever produced still exists. And much of it is in the ocean, affecting our oceans.
There are several steps you can take to reduce your plastic consumption:
Use reusable shopping bags.
Don't buy pre-packaged items in plastic.
Use glass containers instead of plastic to store your food.
Ban single-use plastic bags, straws, water bottles and packaging.
Rethink your shopping habits
This may be a new one for you, but know that you are voting with your money. By choosing what you buy, you are supporting and sending a clear and powerful message to all the companies you buy from. Think carefully over what you are buying as well as its life cycle.
Ask yourself a few questions before you buy:
What materials is this made of?
How long will this have a value or use?
Does the brand care about environmental and social issues?
Does it come in packaging, and if so, is it necessary and what is it made of?
Being more conscious of your purchases rewards those companies committed to sustainable practices.
Buy and eat local and seasonal
Livestock farming and mass agriculture waste a lot of our natural resources, such as water and land. Likewise, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and pollution from the production and transportation of commercial agriculture is significant. Make conscious choices every day about what you choose to eat and where it comes from.
Reduce your meat consumption and replace it with plant-based alternatives made from local and seasonal produce. Your local farmers' market connects you with producers in your neighborhood and provides you with sustainable food that doesn't have to be transported from halfway around the world.
