Peppermint Prince ― Essential peppermint oil’s benefits, effects & more

Peppermint oil has been known as a remedy for centuries. The natural effect of the plant is able to relieve tension headaches and other afflictions.

Essential peppermint oil as a remedy

The essential oil of peppermint (lat. Mentha piperita) is extracted from the leaves of the plant. Since its healing properties have been known for many centuries, the plant is cultivated in many parts of Europe and North America. Annually, about 5000 tons of essential oil are produced worldwide.

You can find it in pharmacies as well as drugstores. For detailed instructions on how to use it, refer to the package insert or ask at the pharmacy. Always dilute the essential oil before use, as it can otherwise be irritating.

Use of peppermint oil for headaches

Peppermint oil is particularly used to treat tension headaches. It is the most common type of headache, as it is not first triggered by other conditions. Already in ancient Rome, peppermint leaves were placed on the temples to alleviate pain.

In the meantime, the effect of this natural remedy has been scientifically proven. More than 20 years ago, a study proved that the application of peppermint oil can noticeably inhibit tension headaches. The peppermint oil showed here the same effect as 1 gram of paracetamol. Since it stimulates the cold receptors of the skin, the oil has a cooling effect that contributes to relaxation. It can also alleviate the action of certain pain messengers that cause headaches.

How to use it for tension headaches:

Mix peppermint oil with another oil so that its proportion is 5-10%. The so-called carrier oil stretches the concentration of peppermint oil. Here you can use olive oil or sunflower oil, for example. Spread the oil mixture generously on the forehead and temples in case of a headache. Be careful not to apply it under the eyes. Eyes and mucous membranes react with irritation to the oil - so always wash your hands well after application.

Tip: Prepare a small glass jar, e.g. a disused medicine bottle of the mixture, so that you can use it directly when needed.

Use peppermint oil for tense muscles

Peppermint oil promotes blood circulation and has a relaxing effect. As such, it helps to relax muscles and can be used for sore or tense muscles. The relaxing effect of peppermint is also the reason why peppermint tea relieves stomach aches.

Use for sore muscles and tension:

Mix two drops of peppermint oil with one tablespoon of a (carrier) oil. Apply the blend to the affected area and rub it in well. Again, wash your hands well afterward.

Use peppermint oil against colds

The healing properties of peppermint oil are also helpful for colds. When you inhale peppermint oil, it loosens mucus and clears the bronchial tubes. As a result, you'll be able to breathe deeply again.

Use for colds:

Pour a liter of hot water into a wide bowl and add 3-5 drops of peppermint oil. Bend over the bowl and place a towel over your head to prevent the steam from escaping. Inhale the steam in steady puffs. After ten breaths at the latest, you should lift the towel so that oxygen can get under it again.

Use peppermint oil to relax and have more energy

While concentrated peppermint may be familiar to you as a remedy for a headache, this scent is also the perfect choice when you need to recharge your batteries during a long car ride or at the office.

Use for more energy:

Apply a few drops of oil or balm to your wrist pulse, and you're ready to go full steam ahead.
