Cold season: Try the 1:4:2 rhythm breathing

The 1:4:2 rhythm breathing means that the ratio is 1:4:2 (inhalation : retention : exhalation). For example, suppose you inhale in 2 counts, hold your breath for 8 counts and exhale for 4 counts.

If done daily, this breathing exercise helps improve your general stamina, relax your nervous system and increase your power of concentration. When you practice it you are building vital energy in your body. It cleanses and strengthens your lungs and your entire respiratory system.

Inhale for 1 count, pause for 4 counts, and exhale for 2 counts.

  1. Place your thumb on the right nostril and close it. Inhale through the free left nostril for 1 count, then place the ring finger on the left nostril so that both are closed, and hold your breath for 4 counts.

  2. Now release the thumb from the right nostril and exhale through it for 2 counts.

  3. Change sides and perform the exercise with the right nostril.

  4. Repeat at least six times.

Over time, you can increase to 2:8:4, then 4:16:8.
