In these peculiar times of Covid-19 and lockdown, many people have had no choice but to work from home. If this is the case for you, perhaps at first you thought it would actually be great to work from home. But sooner or later you will have realized that it's actually hard.
Have a good work setup at home
You feel unmotivated, you lack creativity and productivity. This is probably because you don't have a proper work setup at home. Which is very important for your physical and mental health.
It's all about the small details, like having a practical desk. It's about being at an ideal height to have a good posture or even having a standing desk. Which is really good for your body as it prevents health problems.
If you have back problems and don't want them to develop further, get a chair that keeps your spine straight. It should be comfortable and give you support especially in the lower back. If you can, the best option would be to invest in an ergonomic chair.
Have it tidy and inspiring
If you want to stay focused, make sure your desk is tidy and has only the essentials on it. You don't need to have unnecessary things scattered all over the place, all it will do is distract you.
This doesn't mean you can't have some decorations on your desk or on your wall. You can hang some posters or pictures on the wall to keep you inspired during the day. You can also place some items on your desk, as long as they don't take up too much space and don't distract you. It's best to keep it simple and to avoid bright colors.
If you want, you can add some plants to your workspace to give you positive vibes. They are also beneficial to you. They help you manage energy and stress, and can be therapeutic for some people. Studies show that your productivity can increase by 15% if you have plants around your desk.
Separate work from your home setup and get natural light
The best thing to do is to find an optimal place at home to set up your workspace. Ideally, a quiet place where you won't be bothered by children, family or pets.
Be careful as well that you are not tempted by what's in the room. It would also be great if you can place your desk near a window. That will allow you to get some fresh air in the mornings to perk you up. Having a window in your workspace gives you natural light that has a positive effect on your mental health.
Even if natural light enters your workspace, you also need some artificial lights. Natural light changes throughout the day and does not last as long. The ideal light should be neither too bright nor too soft. Moderately soft light relaxes you and allows you to be more efficient. It avoids headaches, poor eyesight and fatigue.
Have the right equipment
Make sure you work with a good computer. If it is too slow, it will not only take you longer to do your work, but it will be frustrating. It's easy for you to lose patience, which will lead to anger and a loss of motivation and productivity.
Dress to work and keep your routines
How you prepare and start your work day at home is really important. Even if you stay at home and no one is going to see you in your pajamas.
Think about keeping the usual morning and work routine you had before working at home. Prepare yourself as you normally would and start at the same hour, don't let yourself get carried away. If you don't plan your working day and treat it accordingly, your work will not be as efficient as before.
Don’t forget to take a break
It is essential to take a few breaks over the course of the day. Don't forget your human necessities. It's easy to get carried away with work, but it will actually make you perform less well. Your mind and body need to rest. Plan your breaks in advance and make them consistent.
To make the most of these breaks, the first thing you should do is get out of your workspace. Take a walk, either at home or outdoors. Your body will thank you for it since it is not good to sit all day long. It is also the best time to talk to close friends or family, it will help you disconnect from work. It can also help you stay motivated and feel less lonely.
Fuel your body
Don't forget to drink enough water and have some healthy snacks if you are hungry. You want to keep your body in shape and want to exercise a little, but you always find yourself unmotivated or without time to do it? Think about doing it during those breaks. The least you should do is get up and stretch your body.
Plan your day
Finally, set goals and plan the rest of your day. When working from home it is easy to stay connected longer than you should. Don't continue to have a lazy, non-productive day as you become exhausted by maintaining these bad habits.
