Sodium

Sodium — Everything you need to know

What is sodium?

Sodium is a mineral that plays an important role in the body's hydration status. It is an essential element for the body, but it can have many deleterious effects when consumed in excess.

What is its function and what are its benefits?

The main function of sodium is to facilitate digestion and absorption of nutrients.

On the other hand, it can contribute to an increase in blood pressure, which is problematic for some people.

When consumed in excess, it counteracts the beneficial effects of potassium and inverts the sodium-potassium ratio, thereby altering the body's acid-base balance, which can lead to imbalances in the body (bone loss, etc.).

Where to find it?

Sodium is mainly found in our table salt, but most of the sodium we consume comes from the salt added by manufacturers in their food preparations.

Deficiency and excess

It is important to consume sodium in moderation. In general, in our industrialized countries, as our diet is often too rich in salt, it is wiser to limit or reduce its consumption.

Conversely, low sodium intake is not recommended either, and can have certain harmful effects (muscle cramps, dehydration, fatigue, etc.). As a result, some people, such as athletes (who evacuate a good part of it by sweating) may have increased needs.
